This reproduced French absinthe spoon has 8 large stars mixed with 14 small holes in the rectangular grid. The large stars allow the sweet water to fall more easily into the absinthe glass. It is an exact reproduction of an antique design from the late 19th century.

This spoon is used in the preparation of a traditional French or Swiss absinthe. A traditional absinthe is prepared by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing the absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube on top of the spoon. Ice-cold water flows slowly from a fountain, carafe or rocker over the sugar cube. The cold sugar water then flows from the spoon into the absinthe glass, releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to take on a milky white color, as the water mixes with the anise.
