This unique pyrogen is a reproduction of those found throughout Europe (and in particular - France) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In those days, it was common to see a match player sitting on a bistro or bar table. Strikes served three purposes. Firstly, the upper cylindrical container was used to hold the matches. Secondly, the grooved surface on the side (or base) was used to strike and light the match. And finally, the piece served as an advertising medium. Many companies used such items to promote their products, and they were usually supplied free of charge to the bar.
White-tipped or "strike-anywhere" matches are offered for use and are on sale on our website. Ordinary kitchen matches will not light, as the white-tipped match is required. White-tipped matches can also be used to hold various objects, such as toothpicks.
