Perhaps the most popular antique absinthe glass today is the legendary Pontarlier glass. Although slight variations of this glass exist, this style is considered the quintessential traditional Pontarlier absinthe glass.
The glass was first named after him in an advertisement for the leading absinthe producer of the time, Pernod Fils. The newspaper of the brand's hometown, Pontarlier, France, was featured in this advertisement (see photo below). Due to the company's popularity, the newspaper was sent all over France, which only increased the notoriety of Pernod Fils and Pontarlier glass.
This glass is made in the same proportions as an original Pontarlier glass, including its reservoir. The reservoir is the area used to measure the quantity of absinthe to be used for a glass. This measurement was intended to help the bartender in a bar, by allowing him to know the exact amount of absinthe to pour, and it let the customer know that it was an honest absinthe. The size of the reservoir generally correlates with the size of the glass used. The reservoir measures 25 ml, which is the norm for an absinthe glass of this size.
This is a machine-molded glass, so it is thick and solid - ideal for intensive use in a bar or restaurant.
