Known as a tongue-shaped absinthe spoon, this piece features a mix of squares and small holes in its grid. It is an exact reproduction of a late 19th century absinthe spoon. A traditional spoon that would typically have been found in most European bistros and bars in the days before absinthe was banned (pre-1915). Because of its long tongue, this spoon fits much larger glasses than some of its counterparts.
This spoon is used in the preparation of a traditional French or Swiss absinthe. A traditional absinthe is prepared by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing the absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube on top of the spoon. Ice-cold water flows slowly from a fountain, carafe or rocker over the sugar cube. The cold sugar water then flows from the spoon into the absinthe glass, releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to take on a milky white color, as the water mixes with the anise.
