This reproduction absinthe spoon is one of 8 known absinthe spoons, originally made to celebrate the introduction of the Eiffel Tower at the Exposition Universelle, a world's fair held in Paris, France, in 1889. There are 3 spoons with the same design, but with subtle differences, making the originals highly collectible. The spoon's grill features a beautiful drawing of the Eiffel Tower located in the Champ de Mars, the park that surrounds the tower. This is an exact reproduction of a late 19th century absinthe spoon.

This spoon is used in the preparation of a traditional French or Swiss absinthe. A traditional absinthe is prepared by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing the absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube on top of the spoon. Ice-cold water flows slowly from a fountain, carafe or rocker over the sugar cube. The cold sugar water then flows from the spoon into the absinthe glass, releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to take on a milky white color, as the water mixes with the anise.
