This absinthe spoon is commonly called an arrow spoon because of the small arrow cut-outs in its grid. It is very similar to our No. 11 absinthe spoon. The difference being the slight rise on the sides of the grid. It is an exact reproduction of a late 19th century absinthe spoon.
This spoon is used in the preparation of a traditional French or Swiss absinthe. A traditional absinthe is made by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing the absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube on top of the spoon. Iced water flows slowly from a fountain, jug or pendulum over the sugar cube. The cold sweet water then flows from the spoon into the absinthe glass, releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to take on a milky white color, as the water mixes with the anise.
