This absinthe spoon is generally called an arrow spoon because of the small arrow cut-outs in its grid. It is very similar to the #10 spoon. The major difference being that this spoon has a flatter surface, unlike the #10 spoon whose sides are slightly raised.

This spoon is used in the preparation of a traditional French or Swiss absinthe. A traditional absinthe is prepared by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing the absinthe spoon on top of the glass and a sugar cube on top of the spoon. Iced water flows slowly from a fountain, carafe or balance on the sugar cube. The cold sugar water then flows from the spoon into the absinthe glass, releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to take on a milky white color, as the water mixes with the anise.
