This six-spout absinthe fountain is a reproduction of the Belle Époque fountain of the 19th century. The lid has the classic "acorn" top and is removable for adding iced water to the glass bowl. The glass bowl is mouth-blown and the fountains are hand-crafted, with chrome plating on the brass. The fountain has six metal taps, capable of holding one to six glasses at a time.
Absinthe fountains were mostly used in high-end bars due to their high price. They were brought to the table, where the customer prepared the absinthe himself. Absinthe fountains were (and still are) the preferred way to prepare absinthe, as the water flow can be perfectly controlled. But unfortunately, due to accidents, very few fountains have survived intact with their original glass bowls.
Correct use involves pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then placing an absinthe spoon on the glass and a sugar cube on the spoon. The fountain lid is removed and fresh water and ice cubes are added to the glass bowl. The tap is turned slightly and the ice water drips slowly from the fountain onto the sugar cube. The cold sugar water then drips from the spoon into the glass of absinthe, releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise. The combination also begins to take on a milky white color, as the water mixes with the anise. Refresh the water before each use.
The fountain can accommodate 1 to 4 people at a time. The proportion of drinks varies from 1 part absinthe to 3 to 5 parts water, depending on individual preference.
